Orion was engaged to provide Early Contractor Involvement and Detailed Designs for a nationally significant renewable energy facility which will be the home of a large battery energy storage system. The battery will capture energy from various sources – the grid, solar, wind – and store it for reliable, clean, and affordable electricity for power system operators and energy consumers.
The client required a rapid turnaround, our project planning and expertise ensured we met the project deadline.
Orion was engaged to provide Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) and Detailed Designs for bulk earthworks, drainage design, road layouts, and structural footing designs for all onsite structures.
Orion successfully worked within a tight deadline, overseeing the project from structural design to civil construction. We provided structural design services for the following:
Bulk earthworks and drainage design: A key feature of the site design was maintaining minimum grades to facilitate equipment and operational access. This required precise 3D design of the bulk earthworks and grading, fully integrated with the drainage design.
Road layouts: Road layouts for the project were set by the Principal’s operational and access requirements, which also partly formed the constraints of the drainage concepts applied to the site.
Structural footing designs: Bespoke footing designs were needed to accommodate the equipment vendor’s requirements, site grading, and ground conditions.
Our design team aligned design concepts with stakeholder objectives, utilising our extensive structural design experience and engineering best practices to draft the design reports and design methodologies efficiently and quickly.
The design addressed a large upstream catchment by intercepting and diverting storm waterflows around the site with large open swales. A large downstream basin was also designed to collect site stormwater catchments while also maintaining capacity to contain any fire water refuse runoff.
The project’s requirement for gravel finishes on all access roads meant close co-ordination with the Pavement Design Engineer. This ensured that drainage and grading constraints were satisfied while integrating gravelled site areas and considering ongoing environmental dust controls.
We provided an economical design solution to ensure the individual footings for over 400 battery units were able to be constructed within the project budget. We collaborated closely with the client and site contractor to determine and fine-tune the footing designs from a cost, safety and constructability perspective.
Orion’s coordinated and collaborative approach and technical expertise facilitated prompt client review and approval, enabling early site commencement to meet the desired deadline.
The client and project sponsor commended Orion for our commitment and technical knowledge which ensured a smooth project execution and met critical milestones. As an integral part of the project team, Orion provided value engineering solutions, demonstrating our clear approach and economic overview in designs.
We helped the client stay within budget while meeting all technical requirements, without compromising quality. By applying innovative thinking and cutting-edge technology, we delivered structural design solutions, bespoke footing designs, and large scale drainage solutions tailored to the project.
