The Vale Estate is one of Sheargold’s exciting new communities in Wongawilli within the broader West Dapto release. There is a plan for new amenities including schools, town centre, road upgrades and more. For this stage, Sheargold required survey services to complete a site model and to ascertain the volumes of three large stockpiles.
With an open mind for new technology, and to progress to earthworks in an efficient manner, Sheargold engaged Orion to assist with surveying using drone and digital technology.
Drone and digital technology is still relatively new in our field, and Orion is at the leading edge of new technology acceptance. The challenge is to increase the confidence of our partners and educate them on the benefits of accepting new ways of doing things.
In this case, it was turning the traditional approach of surveying on its head, and streamlining our services using drone and digital technology. Orion prides itself on being an innovator and disrupter in our field, we had every confidence our suggested approach would be a success.
Orion led a drone flight mission to ascertain the volumes of three large stockpiles, at the same time capturing a complete site model of the site’s condition on the date of the drone flight.
We used the drone flight mission to:
- Survey the current site conditions and generate volumes for earthworks progress.
- Leverage the drone data to validate traditional survey capture against photogrammetry models.
- Provide a dataset for training of the Machine Learning Asset Library.
A reality model was generated utilising the sites ground control. The data was then validated through reports exported from the drone model, these showed the variance between the ground control and the projected position of the point in the model.
The existing ground survey was referenced in the reality model to further confirm the drone’s accuracy. The modelling showed there was no more than 20mm discrepancy between the traditional survey and control marks across the site.
Our client benefitted from time and cost savings across the project by utilising new technology. They were efficiently delivered
- Fast and accurate stockpile volumes.
- Date stamped conditions of the site on the day of the flight allowing for future progress mapping, reporting and marketing.
- A reality model showing site contours and Digital Terrain Models (DTM).
With Orion’s expertise and innovative modelling, the result allowed Sheargold to quickly proceed with progress claims on their earthworks. Additionally, they had a reality model of their full site for future use.
Sheargold held every confidence in the validation report and stockpile reports that were generated, and Orion’s capability to deliver on emerging technologies to assist them in the future.
