An innovative research project for catalytic infrastructure was presented by our very own James Green together with UDIA NSW on Friday, 14 March 2025.
The UDIA-NSW Illawarra Shoalhaven Building Blocks 2025 Report was launched to a sell-out crowd in Wollongong. The project, led by James with the support of the UDIA-NSW Illawarra and Shoalhaven Chapters, identified the essential infrastructure required to accelerate housing completions toward the National Housing Accord targets. James’ presentation demonstrated that prioritising key roads, power, water and wastewater items could fast-track 5,600 new residential lots in the Wollongong, Shellharbour, Kiama and Shoalhaven local government areas.
“The Illawarra Shoalhaven is a critical part of the NSW economy,” James said. “A strong economy needs housing that is affordable to the workforce. Historical housing delivery rates won’t get us anywhere near the targets set by the federal government. But by focusing on a few important items of essential infrastructure we can accelerate housing to reach those goals. Cooperation and funding by developers, utility agencies and government is required to make it happen.”
The report was warmly welcomed by the audience of development industry experts. Martin Wells, a UDIA-NSW Past President and Orion Advisory Group Member, said, “I’m so pleased to see the Building Blocks research continue to play an important role in the development priorities of NSW. Housing our population will need more homes in both greenfield and infill areas. The Illawarra Shoalhaven Building Blocks report simplifies the infrastructure priorities to support government goals. Well done UDIA NSW and Orion for this important piece of research”.
Orion Group was a proud sponsor of the event. We look forward to continuing our work to stimulate housing starts with UDIA-NSW, our development industry colleagues, and our partner clients.
