On 21 October, Orion provided industry mentor support to the Celestino Sydney Science Park (SSP) STEM Cross Schools Grand Final Challenge at Rydges World Square in the CBD.
The challenge brought together 130 students from various schools to solve an important urban development challenge – designing a smart, sustainable, and flourishing community for Sydney Science Park.
Our team were tasked with assisting to create a solution for a young family whose daughter suffered from heat-related skin rashes, requiring her to stay indoors on hot days. The students developed an innovative solution, proposing a home with a green wall, improved ventilation, and solar panels to maintain a cooler indoor environment.
While they didn’t win the challenge, they did a great job with their solution and their pitch impressed both the audience and judges.
Other student groups explored solutions for mitigating heat, implementing circular economy practices, improving transport, connecting to country, and maximizing outdoor spaces.
The students did an amazing job thinking of innovative solutions and working together. We are lucky that the future of urban development is in capable hands!
“I loved hearing the ideas and solutions the students came up. Some of them showed great out-of-the-box thinking, and many of them contained smart ideas using technology to assist in the solution. I was impressed at how professional the pitches were. It was a fun day!” – Emma Odede, Project Coordinator
